Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Grace Caroline Currey (Fall) have joined Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Tim Blake Nelson (Captain America: Brave New World) and Simon Rex (Red Rocket) in true-crime biopic feature The Leader, based on the 1997 mass suicide of the religious group known as Heaven’s Gate. The project has secured an interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
The Leader, the upcoming biopic about the Heaven’s Gate cult set to star Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga, has lured another big-name follower. The Hollywood Reporter can reveal that Simon Rex has joined the real-life crime drama, unveiled earlier this week at the European Film Market in Berlin, where The Exchange is introducing the project to buyers.
Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga are set to play the founders of the religious cult Heaven’s Gate — which participated in a mass suicide in 1997 — in true-crime biopic The Leader, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Michael Gallagher (Funny Story) directs from his own original screenplay. “The Leader will depict the Heaven’s Gate tragedy through the lens of hope and heartbreak. It is a film about the dangers of self-deception, the thirst for human connection and the mystery of faith.”
Simon Rex gave his career a new jolt of electricity with his nearly Oscar-nominated turn in Red Rocket back in 2021. Since then, there’s been a bit of a wait to see where this renaissance would lead Rex. Well, now we’ve found out what one of his most interesting new roles will be. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rex is joining the cast of The Leader, a drama based on the Heaven’s Gate cult. Also in the film will be Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga.
The Michael Gallagher-directed feature will be a hot title at the 2023 European Film Market. The Leader will hit the market at the 2023 European Film Market in Berlin via sales agent, The Exchange. Gallagher also produces on behalf of Cinemand alongside Jana Winternitz, and Michael Wormser with Balcony 9 Productions’ Joel David Moore and Max Osswald. Daniel Taborga and Rishi Bajaj of Balcony 9 Productions executive produce with Evan Silverberg, Cassian Elwes, and Entertainment 360.
“PBC” is a scripted series that also looks to its actors for improv, with Gallagher subscribing to the Adam McKay school of directing: Get one from the page, then let your performers loose. Populating those pages, the “PBC” writers’ room includes several CPAs (certified public accountants), including series creator and FloQast CEO Mike Whitmire, the inspiration for series-lead Sarah (Flaum). Whitmire’s initial pitch, a quote that made it into a script and unofficially serves as the show’s logline, went like this: “No accountant ever grew up wanting to be an accountant.”
“PBC is a half-hour workplace mockumentary comedy in the spirit of The Office, Parks & Recreation, and Silicon Valley, but specifically focusing on the people who handle the money: Accountants,” reads the series’ synopsis. “In Season 2, viewers are invited to tag along with the accounting department of a fast-growth tech startup as they wrangle a rowdy sales team while balancing the personal and professional relationships that accountants know all too well.”
FloQast Studios’ “PBC” is set to return for a second season. Starring Danny Trejo, Kate Flannery, Pete Gardner, Jessica Sarah Flaum, and Christian A. Pierce, the workplace mockumentary series focuses on the accounting department of a tech startup during their year-end audit. Cheri Oteri and Neil Flynn will be joining the cast of “PBC” this season. Josh Sims serves as executive producer and director on the series. Michael Gallagher serves as executive producer, director and showrunner, and Cinemand Films’ Jana Winternitz and Michael Wormser produce.
The series features notable stars including Danny Trejo (Machete), Kate Flannery (The Office), Pete Gardner (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Creed Bratton (The Office), Christian A. Pierce (The Real Bros of Simi Valley), Sam Asghari (Hacks), Brittany Furlan Lee (The Dirt), Jessica Sarah Flaum (The Tale), Amy Letcher (Black Sails) Emily Tosta (Mayans M.C.), Jacob Wysocki (Pitch Perfect). Season two will feature new cast additions including Cheri Oteri (Saturday Night Live), Neil Flynn (Scrubs) and more.
When I say something is as good as The Office, people should not take that lightly. I am the obnoxious girl you've heard people on Twitter complain about. Read me a line - I could probably tell you what episode it's from, give you context, and possibly recite the rest of the scene too. That's why, when I tell you this new show 'PBC' is going to be the next Office, I am being 100% serious.
PBC features top-tier comedic talent, including Danny Trejo (Machete), Kate Flannery (The Office), Creed Bratton (The Office), Christian A. Pierce (The Real Bros of Simi Valley), Jessica Sarah Flaum (The Tale), and Brittany Furlan Lee (The Dirt). Michael Gallagher (Funny Story) serves as Executive Producer, Director, and Showrunner for PBC. The series is produced by Jana Winternitz and Michael Wormser of Cinemand Films, the production company behind the hit series The Real Bros of Simi Valley and The Thinning franchise.
